Girls Takeover Parliament Tonga 2019 launched on International Day of the Girl, 11th October 2019.
Girls Takeover Parliament is a Jasiri Australia founded programme. In partnership with the Commonwealth Youth Council, and Tonga Youth Leaders, the initiative has successfully been implemented in Tonga for the second year running. The programme is designed to empower and educate young female leaders aspiring to learn more about Leadership, the roles of Parliament, Government, it’s members, Democracy and Good Governance.
Girls Takeover Parliament Tonga 2019 saw 28 young females between the ages of 14 – 28 participate in a weeks orientation, training and a full day of debates.
The debate topics were focussed on on two specific matters:
I. Climate Change : presented by the Minister of MEIDECC as a Petition to push for a youth desk per Constituency Office to ensure the participation of youth in tackling the increasing issue of Climate Change and need for Climate Justice
II. Temporary Special Measures for Women in Parliament: Reserved Seats for Women: presented as a motion by a Peoples Representative to speed the presence of women in the highest body of decision-making in Tonga, Parliament.
Parliamentarians were also given the opportunity to voice other matters as their final session for their sitting. Some of the matters raised were Youth Unemployment, Illicit Drug Use and Crime, and the need to better Tonga’s Education System.
100% of our participants agreed that from Girls Takeover Parliament, they have an increased understanding and knowledge of the roles of Parliament, Government, it’s members, Democracy and Good Governance as well as Climate Change.
